Report: Rafa Benitez Willing To Join Premier League Rivals Should Vacancy Come Up

It was a disappointing transfer window for Newcastle United as the last week saw some the side failing in their attempt to bring in any real high-profile names.

For manager Rafael Benitez, this will be incredibly frustrating as he had made it clear that he wanted to add to the squad before this week’s transfer deadline.

However, owner Mike Ashley would not provide the funds and this has led to speculation that the former Champions League winning manager may leave Tyneside should the opportunity present itself.

A report in the Guardian, says that if Slavan Bilic leaves his post as West Ham United manager, the Spaniard would be in line to replace him.

The report states:

With Slaven Bilic under considerable pressure at West Ham, it is not inconceivable the post could shortly become vacant. Were this to happen Benítez would seriously consider relocating to London – although Ashley would be expected to fight hard to keep him at St James’ Park.

A clause in the 57-year-old’s contract stipulates that either Newcastle’s manager or the club seeking to employ him must pay £5m‑6m to trigger his release, and Ashley would be expected to play hardball over exit negotiations.

While it is surely too early to say Bilic is under pressure in his post, West Ham are bottom of the league table – having conceded ten goals in just three games.

With so many boards having knee-jerk reactions in giving bosses the boot, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the London Stadium club could axe their manager around Christmas if things don’t improve.

West Ham previously tried to get Benitez as manager in 2015 but failed to do so. However, according to this report, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss is highly regarded at the London Stadium.
