Manchester United duo Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard have become renowned for their heavy use of social media.
Updates from the pair are constant as are the elaborate dance routines and handshakes that they work on – with the latest one coming via Pogba’s Instagram account on Tuesday.
While some can’t get enough of the updates, former players are less than impressed – with ex-Man United defender Rio Ferdinand criticising the timing of the release just over 24 hours before an important Premier League fixture against Hull to come.
Speaking on BT Sport after Liverpool’s draw with Chelsea at Anfield, Ferdinand laid into both players for what he considers to be celebrating without having earned the right to do so.
Ferdinand, along with fellow analysts Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman, had some less than complimentary things to say about the video and its stars:
“Listen, I’m all for having a bit of fun on social media.
“But when you’re fifth [sixth] in the league, you’re not in the Champions League positions and you’re fighting…
“Until you’re winning, that’s when you go out and do stuff like that.
“I’ve dug out Arsenal players for doing stuff like this before and it would be wrong of me to not talk about the United players.
“I’m all for having fun, and I think part of Pogba’s appeal is that he’s a happy free spirit – which I wouldn’t want to take anything away from – but there’s a time and getting the balance right.
“If that footage comes out after you’ve won a cup final, or a league – I’d be the first one to be pushing it out.
“If Fergie’s there, no chance.”
Having sat out Man United’s routine 4-0 win against Wigan in the FA Cup last week, Pogba will return to the starting lineup for the match on Wednesday, with favourable results 24 hours earlier meaning that José Mourinho’s side can narrow the gap further on almost every side above them with a win against Hull at Old Trafford.
