There is only really one interesting aspect to the last day of Premier League action and that is the small matter of qualification for next season’s Champions League. The way the season has developed, it’s Liverpool and Arsenal vying for that fourth spot. Arsenal knew going into today that they needed to win and Liverpool had to slip up.
Arsenal, despite being reduced to 10 men due to a Laurent Koscielny red card, went 2-0 up in the first half of their clash with Everton at the Emirates. Liverpool meanwhile were huffing and puffing against Middlesbrough at Anfield and although there was plenty of time left in the game, you couldn’t help but notice the worried faces in the stadium.
Thankfully for the Anfield faithful, they entered the break after just going 1-0 up thanks to a sublime Georginio Wijnaldum strike. A lovely bit of interplay between Nathan Clyne and Roberto Firminio put the Dutchman through on goal.
Wijnaldum’s control with his first touch was incredible before blasting a right footed shot beyond the helpless Brad Guzan.
Phillipe Coutinho and Adam Lallana have since made it 3-0 and it certainly looks like Liverpool will be playing Champions League football at Anfield next season.
