The good times are returning at the Molineux, as Wolves sit one point away from a Premier League return following a 2-0 win at home to Derby last night.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have been the frontrunners throughout the campaign in England’s second division and knew that victory against Derby would all but secure their return to the Premier League after a six-year absence.
The night could not have started much better for the league leaders, Diego Jota firing home the opener after just minutes – but the best was yet to come.
Ruben Neves – signed from Porto for a record £15.8m during the summer – made his mark on the scoreboard early in the second half, with one of the best goals you’re likely to see scored at any level this campaign.
With the ball cleared into his path after a corner, the 21-year-old expertly flicked the ball up to set himself, before unleashing an unstoppable dipping volley that landed into the top-left corner to send the home supporters into complete raptures.
It was Neves’ sixth goal of the season, having also bagged the winner in their 1-0 win away to promotion rivals Cardiff last weekend – and means that should they secure a point at home to local rivals Birmingham City on Sunday – Wolves will be the first side promoted to the Premier League for the 2018/19 season.
With players like him in their ranks, they should do more than alright mixing it with the best in the country. At 21, Neves is likely to be coveted in the months to come.
