Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have started the Premier League season on fire and continued their good form, hammering Watford 6-0 on Saturday.
Sergio Aguero grabbed a hat-trick, while Gabriel Jesus, Nicolas Otamendi and Raheem Sterling also found the net in a performance which sets the benchmark for their Premier League title rivals.
All the early talk has surrounded Manchester United’s bright start to the campaign, Guardiola’s men have now scored 15 goals without response in their last three games – with Liverpool, Feyenoord and now Watford torn apart by some wonderful displays of attacking, dominant football.
The case was no different today with the Sky Blues dominating from the off and immediately having the Hornets on the back foot. Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne saw plenty of the ball, and the Belgian picked out Aguero with a sumptuous delivery that the Argentian glanced in to give them the lead.
He picked up he and City’s seconds just moments later as Gabriel Jesus chased down a lost ball and found David Silva’s clever run, he squared past Heurelho Gomes and it was as good as game over.
Aguero then cleverly turned provider as he played in his strike partner Jesus to stroke home powerfully into the far corner. The flag stayed down though he appeared to be offside – and Watford manager Marco Silva was left with an incredibly difficult team talk at half-time.
Nicolas Otamendi was free in the box to head home a fourth from David Silva’s cross – City’s crossing was absolutely flawless at times and it certainly could have been more than 6-0 given their dominance and ruthlessness going forward.
Aguero then added the pick of the bunch, picking up Bernardo Silva’s ball and bullying his way past four Watford defenders and taking Gomes out of the equation before finding the far corner with an exquisitely accurate finish.
Raheem Sterling was then brought down in the box by Christian Kabasele and, despite Guardiola insisting Aguero take the penalty, he hammered home to put even more gloss on a truly stunning performance.
Confidence is now flowing through the veins of this team and with lowly Crystal Palace to come next, one would imagine that this side’s fantastic form is set to continue for the coming weeks.
City were a joy to watch today in the perfect advertisement for Pep Guardiola’s infamous brand of one-touch possession football. They really are starting to look like the team to beat this campaign.
