Manchester City’s dreams of an unprecedented quadruple lie in shreds tonight – as Wigan Athletic ran out 1-0 victors over Pep Guardiola’s side to progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Will Grigg’s 78th minute strike means that City cannot lift four trophies this campaign – although they do still play a strong hand in deciding the destiny of the Premier League title, the Champions League trophy and of course the Carabao Cup – where they face Arsenal in the final on Sunday.
Having fielded a strong team which included the likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Raheem Sterling – fans were shocked at City succumbing to defeat despite Fabian Delph’s red card in first half stoppage time.
The giant-killing epitomised the magic of the FA Cup – and rival supporters were delighted to see City crash out of a competition for the first time this season.
For the second season running City are going to fail to win the quadruple despite being awarded the lot in October.

Genuinely relieved that lot won’t be winning the quadruple. Let’s not lie…it crossed our minds in recent weeks!

While lots of fans are happy that City won’t win everything on offer this season, and their own clubs now have a much clearer path to silverware – Pep Guardiola’s men have the perfect opportunity to write a wrong, as they bid to lift the first trophy of the campaign on Sunday.
For now, the magic of the FA Cup is well and truly alive. It is a testament to City’s ability that many thought a quadruple was a genuine possibility in the first place.
