On another thrilling weekend of Premier League action which saw Manchester United, Huddersfield and West Brom maintain their 100% records – we’ve picked out the eleven star performers to comprise our team of the weekend.
Players from Stoke, Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester United, Huddersfield and West Ham all get the nod.
Jack Butland – Stoke
The England international made a number of impressive saves to keep Arsenal at bay in his side’s 1-0 win – he was instrumental in their victory as the visitors did create a number of good chances.
Marcos Alonso – Chelsea
The second week of the campaign and we will struggle to see a better free-kick than Alonso’s effort today – as he grabbed a brace in a big victory for Chelsea. If he replicates any of last season’s form – the Spaniard will be the name on everyone’s lips again this time around. A leader in defence and attack.
Eric Bailly – Manchester United
His first goal for the club was the icing on a commanding performance by the Ivorian, who is arguably head and shoulders the best defender at Old Trafford at the moment.
Harry Maguire – Leicester
Proving to be an early contender for the best signing of the summer – comfortable with the ball and electrifying in the air – as he proved when grabbing the second in Leicester’s win over Brighton.
Andy Robertson – Liverpool
The Scotsman linked up well with his team-mates, constantly getting forward and whipping in some delightful crosses as well as defending competently. Looked the full package for Liverpool.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Manchester United
Darting runs and some incisive passing – the Armenian is the key in the United attack with four assists in just two games this season. Fantasy football managers will be drooling at the mouth as United have laid down a marker for the Premier League title.
Aaron Mooy – Huddersfield Town
The Australian was everywhere in another big Premier League win for the Terriers, scoring a wonderful goal to seal the victory to cap off a great all-round midfield performance.
Paul Pogba – Manchester United
Starting to show why everyone fussed over him in Italy. Took his goal delightfully and linked up well with Romelu Lukaku. Pogba looks more of a finished article so far this campaign, though that can arguably be put down to the influence of Nemanja Matic.
Riyad Mahrez – Leicester
A delight to watch. His trickery created the opening goal after just 52 seconds, and the Algerian was unlucky not to come away with his name on the scoresheet in another eye-catching performance.
Jese – Stoke
The debut of the day. Jese had just one training session with Stoke before scoring a well-worked winner against Arsenal – that speaks for itself. His pace was frightening at times and he looks to be a good addition to Mark Hughes’ side.
Chicharito – West Ham
His efforts proved in vain, but the little Mexican showed just why many regard him as the epitome of poachers with two goals. Were it not for ill-discipline on the part of his team-mates, Hernandez could have been the hero for West Ham.
