Multiple outlets are reporting that Manchester United’s main midfield target for the upcoming transfer window has been identified with the Reds looking to the Bernabeu to strengthen their side.
It is being suggested by the British press that United are interested in signing German international Toni Kroos from Real Madrid.
Jose Mourinho has admitted in recent weeks that the Reds are in need of a new addition to replace the outgoing Michael Carrick, and with cracks having recently begun to show in his relationship with record-signing Paul Pogba, the need for a new face in the United midfield appears to have become a very badly kept secret.
“We need to sign a midfield player because we are going to lose Michael Carrick. Of course, we need balance in the team.” via Sky Sports
The Old Trafford club are said to have had a long-lasting interest in Kroos, with the 28-year-old almost signing for them in 2014, only for Louis van Gaal to pull the plug on the deal and the German instead choose to move to Real Madrid.
Since then, having won the World Cup with his country and Champions League titles with Madrid, Kroos has established a reputation as one of the finest midfielders in world football.
However, Los Blancos look set to overhaul their squad this summer in the hope of making a marquee signing, and this has prompted United to inquire about Kroos’ availability.
The Independent are reporting that Kroos would be brought in to provide anchorage in a Carrick-like role either side of Nemanja Matic and Pogba, rather than be introduced as a replacement for the Frenchman.
While nothing is concrete yet, it is clear United will have to replace Carrick in some way, shape or form and Kroos would be the ideal solution to a midfield that withholds plenty of ability but is yet to flourish.
Many football fans would love to see Kroos ply his trade in the Premier League and it could very well become a possibility in the coming months.
This story is only beginning to develop.
