The Carabao Cup quarter final at Ashton Road roared into life in the second half.
Championship side Bristol City more than held their own against visiting giants Manchester United in the first half of their Wednesday night encounter, and their spirit and quality play yielded what’s sure to be one of their most famous victories.
A United side that had made ten changes from their win over West Brom struggled to make inroads, and were made to pay in the 51st minute with a spectacular salvo.
Left-sided player Joe Bryan used some nice skill in his own half to get the ball moving in the other direction. He continued his run as the ball found Marlon Pack, who timed his through ball perfectly to send the onrushing Bryan past Marcos Rojo.
The resulting strike was nigh-on unstoppable.
The customary gif that Bristol City have become famed for soon followed.
The jubilation didn’t last long however, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was making his first start in eight months, scored his first goal since April 9 just seven minutes later.
The 36-year-old, who endured a very difficult game up until then, opted to take a free kick in a dangerous position. A slight deflection off Corey Smith was enough to beat former Red Devil goalkeeper Luke Steele.
United were unable to follow up, and were again punished for their lack of attacking nous with Corey Smith redeeming himself in the 93rd minute.
Fans and neutrals loved the upset victory, while United fans were left to lament what could have been. Even Lucas of Liverpool fame got stuck in.

Bristol City have deserved this. Manchester United simply awful. Why on earth was Sergio Romero wasting time at 1-1? Just mistake after mistake. Woeful.

This team deserves that. A pathetic display from most of the United players.

Rashford and Martial in that second-half were all over the place. So casual. Darmian will be lucky to start for United again. Blind overwhelmed. McTominay naive not to track Smith for the goal. #mufc

Last time we’ll ever see Darmian & Blind.
