Dungannon Swifts’ foray into Europa Conference League action will begin with the second qualifying round tie against Vaduz, but whatever happens in the two games, the Stangmore Park pitch will be a legacy of their success.
Thanks to the Swifts’ Irish Cup success last season, the County Tyrone side is enjoying their first taste of continental football for 18 years.
It is a great reward for the hard work and application of manager Rodney McAree and his squad, but the crucial financial windfall that comes with European qualification has significantly improved the club’s financial situation.
Dungannon Swifts laid a new artificial pitch in 2022 and having taken out a seven-year loan to cover the costs, it appeared a huge outlay that would need to be carefully managed.
As reported by the Belfast Telegraph, the club’s general manager, Simon Graham, detailed the transformational financial uplift.
“A few years ago, we put in the 3G pitch after an interest-free loan from Fifa via the Northern Ireland Football League, which was £300k and there is a good balance from that still to pay off,” he explained.
“Prize money from NIFL went to paying off the pitch, it was a sizeable investment, and things looked scary when we were in a relegation play-off.
“We are in no rush to pay it off early, but this money gives us reassurance. It eases stress for us with that money sitting in reserve. We are always careful with respect to our budget.

Dungannon Swifts’ European money for Conference League qualification, even if only this second round tie against Vaduz of Liechtenstein, has earned them at least £465,000. If they were to progress to the third round for a likely clash with AZ Alkmaar, their rewards (prize money alone) would exceed £600,000.
However, Graham outlined that the modest community club would not be getting carried away with relative riches, highlighting the financial prudence that will remain at Stangmore Park.
“Things like the pitch loan will eat up the money, we will not be throwing it left, right and centre and wasting it. The club needs to remain sound and we want to improve the ground, hopefully with the help of stadium funding.
“There is a financial benefit but an outlay as well. We are looking forward to playing in Europe and giving a good account of ourselves.”
Dungannon Swifts’ second round first leg tie against FC Vaduz kicks off at the Rheinpark Stadium in Vaduz at 6.30 PM.
