“It feels a bit personal.”
Rio Ferdinand has urged Jose Mourinho to draw a line under his ongoing spat with Luke Shaw after the pair went back and forth in the media again in recent days.
Mourinho returned to his criticism of Shaw after England’s victory over the Czech Republic in the Euro 2020 group stages, with the newly-appointed Roma boss ridiculing the left-back’s corner-taking.
Shaw was one of a number of players who didn’t enjoy playing under Mourinho at Manchester United and the full-back responded to his former manager’s latest comments by admitting that he finds it odd that Mourinho “continuously talks about me.”
United legend, Ferdinand, can’t quite understand why Mourinho seems so eager to speak about Shaw when it’s been nearly three years since the pair were together at Old Trafford.
“I don’t get it,” Ferdinand said on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube show.
“Jose Mourinho, look at who he is. This is big Jose Mourinho we’re talking about, the guy, the main man. I love Mourinho and he’s a manager I would love to have played for.
Rio Ferdinand tells Jose Mourinho to leave Luke Shaw alone
“But leave the kid alone, man! You messed up his career. Well, he would argue that Luke Shaw messed up his career and Luke Shaw has to take some responsibility for the period when he didn’t do well under Mourinho.
“Luke has to take responsibility but I think, as well, as a manager you have to take a little bit of responsibility too in getting the best out of your players. That’s part of your job. That’s your remit, to get the best out of players at your disposal. And he didn’t with Luke Shaw. What percentage of that, only they will know.
“But leave the kid alone now, man. You’re talking about him taking corners, please There’s more to talk about than Luke Shaw taking corners.
“It feels a bit personal to me.”
