Matt Doherty dismisses narrative about relationship with Jose Mourinho

“I had a great relationship with him.”

Matt Doherty has dismissed suggestions that his relationship with Jose Mourinho had become strained towards the end of the Portuguese coach’s time at Tottenham Hotspur.

Doherty was a regular starter for Mourinho when he first made the move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Spurs last August but he seemed to fall out of favour with the 58-year-old as the season went on.

But the right-back, currently on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, insisted that there were no issues between him and Mourinho, who was sacked by Spurs in April.

“I definitely got a fair crack of the whip. I still played 25, 26, 27 games – that’s a lot of games in a season to play, so I definitely got a fair crack,” Doherty told reporters.

Matt Doherty on Jose Mourinho relationship

“I had a great relationship with him. He was my neighbour for the whole year where I lived, so the relationship between me and him was fine. He was a great guy but unfortunately these things happen in football.

“That was the case, but he is Jose Mourinho, he is one of the best ever and I have nothing but praise for him.”

At stages of Mourinho’s time in charge of Spurs, it was suggested that the North London club’s now-former manager could potentially cut his losses with Doherty after his debut season with the team.

But Doherty outlasted Mourinho and the Dubliner suggested that the Spurs players have to take responsibility for their roles in Mourinho’s dismissal.

“He was only there for 18 months. If it was three or four years then it could be a different conversation but we just weren’t getting the results for him,” Doherty added.

“The manager always seems to be the one to lose his job, but as players, we were the ones on the pitch and we weren’t able to get the results for him, which was a shame because he’s one of the best managers ever.”
