Can’t fault his honesty.
Damien Duff has predicted that England will beat Germany for the sole reason that he hopes Germany will beat England in Tuesday evening’s Euro 2020 Round of 16 clash.
Duff believes that he has given a few tournament favourites the kiss of death in recent days by confidently predicting that they will reach the quarter-finals with little difficulty.
Ahead of Tuesday’s meeting of England and Germany at Wembley, Duff was careful to avoid picking a Germany win as the former Republic of Ireland winger joked that his predictions seem to be resulting in unexpected results.
“I’ve had a disaster these past few days with my predictions for games,” Duff said on RTE.
Damien Duff “predicts” England win
“I haven’t got one right. Anyone I fancy seems to get knocked out so I’m starting to think I’m a bad omen for these teams so I’ll go with England.”
Duff was joined on the RTE panel by former Germany international Didi Hamann, who was pleased to see the starting XI selected by England manager Gareth Southgate.
Hamann accused Southgate of picking a negative team against Germany and predicted that Joachim Low’s side would enjoy the lion’s share of possession at Wembley.
“I’m a lot more confident after seeing England’s line-up,” Hamann said. “I think they’ve been cautious in the first few games but they’ve now brought another defender in.

“They couldn’t get the ball to the forwards or wingers in the first three games with six defenders and now they’ve got seven. I think it’s a negative line-up that Southgate chose.
“I think the Germans will have been very happy when they saw the line-up. I’m hoping we will dominate in possession and I think we will go through.”
The winner of England vs Germany will welcome the route to the Euro 2020 final as they would face the winners of Sweden vs Ukraine in the quarter-final before then potentially taking on Denmark or the Czech Republic in the semi-final.
