Bruno Fernandes is reportedly delaying the signing of a new Manchester United contract until he receives assurances about Paul Pogba’s future at the club.
Fernandes received the offer a much-improved deal with United last month but he has not yet put pen to paper to extend his stay at Old Trafford, with the Portuguese playmaker eager to be assured that Pogba’s future remains at the club.
The Sun reports that Fernandes views Pogba as a crucial player if the Red Devils are to continue their improvement under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and begin launching more serious title challenges in the coming seasons.
United triggered a one-year extension to Pogba’s United deal at the beginning of this season, meaning the France international’s contract expires in June 2022.
Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has previously hinted that the 28-year-old’s future lay elsewhere but Pogba appears to be much more content at United this term than he has in seasons gone by.
Fernandes recently admitted that he enjoys playing alongside Pogba, despite some concerns earlier in the campaign that Solskjaer would find it difficult to get both midfielders into the same side.
“My relationship with Paul since the beginning, as I met Paul already in Italy, I already know him with much, much relation but, of course, we have a good relationship,” Fernandes said in a recent Q & A on ManUtd.com.
“I think, on the pitch, there is still to come the best for both of us. We can do much better together. I think we are doing better now because people and players are concerned about who they might mark – we have Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in the same places, the same pockets.
“Sometimes it is difficult for players to find who to mark and who to give freedom and so it’s good for the team. That is the best for us because we know we can help the team playing together.
“I think when you play with the best, your best comes out also. For me, playing with Paul, it’s playing with one of the best players in the world. So I think the best of me comes out and it’s helped me to have those kind of qualities.”
