Now sporting the grey hairs that display his mid-thirties, Robin van Persie is still creating dramatic moments in 2018.
At the beginning of the year, the Dutchman returned to Feyenoord, the club with whom he began his professional career. But far from being a token passenger in the twilight of his career, ‘RVP’ has been instrumental to Feyenoord’s fortunes.
Scoring seven goals in the 14 games he played last season, the forward has carried on in that vein this term, scoring six goal in nine games to keep his club at the top end of the Eredivisie.
The latest of those came on Sunday against Vitesse Arnhem in a 2-1 win. The game was 1-1 heading into the final few minutes, and Van Persie dispatched a lengthy free kick with his legendary left foot in the 87th.
Unfortunately, a rash challenge in added time saw the former Arsenal and Manchester United star given a straight red card.
That Feyenoord will feel his loss as keenly as the man himself is testament to the influence he still has whenever he’s on the pitch.
