Watch: Sean Hoare Scores For Dundalk, Immediately Concedes Penalty

The FAI Cup final has caught fire in the early going.

Cork City are taking on league champions Dundalk at the Aviva, and the Leesiders had the better to the match. But it was Dundalk who opened the scoring, somewhat against the run of play.

Michael Duffy whipped in a dangerous corner kick on the 19 minute mark, and a well-placed Sean Hoare was able to head it into the net just before the on-rushing Mark McNulty in the Cork goal could punch it clear.

Not even a minute later, Hoare was the culprit at the other end of the pitch.

The defender brought down Karl Sheppard in the box, earning City an immediate response from the penalty spot. While Pat Fenlon on commentary duty felt that it was somewhat soft, there was undeniable contact made from an impatient Hoare.

Sheppard stepped up to take the penalty, and though it wasn’t struck overly well, it still went under goalkeeper Gary Rogers for a timely equaliser.

With the game having come to life, Dundalk almost sent in another header soon after.

Brian Gartland’s fine attempt was headed off the line by Shane Griffin, keeping the final intriguingly poised at 1-1 approaching the break.

The match is live on RTÉ 2.
