Watch: Messi’s Godly Display Vs Espanyol Included Two Absurd Free Kicks

Lionel Messi coming fifth in the Ballon d’Or rankings was met with widespread disdain.

Barcelona did the domestic double but Messi was unable to guide them deep into the Champions League or indeed Argentina to the World Cup.

Despite scoring over fifty goals during the period valid for judging, the Argentine was fifth in a competition that he has won five times.

It appears that in order to get noticed, the 31-year-old has to go above and beyond. He did just that in Barcelona’s 4-0 thumping of Espanyol on Saturday night.

He first struck early on with what was most likely the best free kick of his illustrious career to-date. Any further description would be futile.

Only minutes later, he dazzled his way deep into the hosts’ half, showcasing the mixture of magic and resilience that have characterised his career, and setting up a fine Ousmane Dembele strike.

Luis Suarez struck just before half time to put the result beyond doubt.

Espanyol showed some steel of their own however, preventing Barca from making the scoreline too embarrassing. But they were unable to stop yet another moment of set-piece brilliance from Messi.

This time from the left, he struck the top corner from further out than his first effort.

The win puts the Catalan giants three points clear atop the La Liga table, ahead of Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.
