It’s a critical night in Europe for both Liverpool and Spurs.
The Reds must win to stand any chance of qualifying for the last 16, while Spurs need to match Inter Milan’s result in the San Siro.
It’s been mixed fortunes for both Premier League sides thus far. Liverpool always stood a good chance against the Napoli side that defeated them, with the return fixture tonight taking place at Anfield.
That infamous cauldron of pressure told after the first half an hour. Mohamed Salah, who was being criticised for not matching his imperious form of last season, scored a hat-trick at the weekend against Bournemouth.
He was a menace here too, and his goal didn’t paint Napoli defenders Mario Rui and Kalidou Koulibaly in a positive light.
Rui tried to turn Salah but to no avail, with the Egyptian powering past Koulibaly. His glance towards the onrushing Sadio Mane threw off David Ospina in goal to give Liverpool a deserved lead.
As expected, PSG are 2-0 up against Red Star Belgrade in the other Group C game.
As for Spurs, hopes were high when Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets were left on the bench. However, they were behind within just seven minutes.
Ousmane Dembele has come under-fire in recent weeks for showing up late to training, but the manager’s faith in the winger has paid off.
Collecting the ball from Kyle Walker-Peters, Dembele left the Englishman for dead, completing a fantastic run to give Barca the early edge.
Spurs recovered to create some chances of their own, but Phillipe Coutinho almost doubled the home team’s lead just before the break, striking the post.
Fortunately for the North London side, Inter are behind against PSV after a Hirving Lozano goal.
