The Dutchman spoke to the media prior to tomorrow night’s clash with Club Brugge.
Manchester United’s first Champions League game since their quarter-final loss to Bayern Munich in 2014 saw gaffer Louis van Gaal face the first European press conference of his Old Trafford tenure.
The Red Devil’s captain is suffering a goal drought in the Premier League, and has yet to get off the mark this season.
Van Gaal is standing by his man, though. He replied when asked about Rooney as a striker:
All the media has written for one year that I have to put him in the striker’s position so it’s amazing that, after two games, you’re doubting your own opinions. I cannot understand that. I have always confidence in my players.
The matchwinner against Aston Villa, Adnan Januzaj was also in tow. He had been linked with a loan move away from Old Trafford, but had this to say:
“Last year was last year, this year is this year. I’ve not played for a long time so I was happy to score my first goal of the season.
“I’m happy to play and give everything for the manager and the club. I’m happy at United and I’m happy with the way the manager has worked with me, so I don’t have any issues with that.”

As for David De Gea…
“The question is not a good question. I don’t answer that anymore.”
Oof. Enjoy the full conference below.
