Although Chelsea’s chances of a top four finish were out of their hands given Liverpool’s win over Brighton, their attempt to bridge the gap was nonetheless feeble.
The Blues’ unbeaten run, suitably stretching back to April Fools Day, ended today against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
Unanswered goals from Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez (who grabbed a brace) mean that Chelsea finish fifth and miss out on Champions League football for the second time in three seasons.
Jose Mourinho won his third league title with Chelsea in 2015, but followed up with a tenth place finish the year after. While still securing Europa League football, Antonio Conte has had a similar shocker after a league title win, something that didn’t go unnoticed.
Chelsea are such a weird club. Win the league in style & then go to shit the season after. Twice. Under different managers.

FT: Newcastle 3-0 Chelsea.
That’s up there with Chelsea’s worst performances of the season. Roma, Watford, Man City and 60 mins against Southampton. Chelsea finish fifth. Europa League and Thursday nights incoming. FA Cup is the last chance to save face. #CFC #NEWCHE

Indeed, Chelsea do still have the FA Cup final to look forward to. Whether Conte will still be in charge may come in to question now given the Chelsea board’s trigger-happy nature.
The thought is crossing my mind that if Abramovich is remotely interested in Chelsea winning the FA Cup he needs to sack Conte tonight.

Mark, no one loved Conte more than me last season, but he has been behind our collapse this season. He needs to sod off lively

Should of gone after Barcelona game believe we would be 3rd now had it happened been poisonous atmosphere sincere dragging us down

Refund the away fans, sack conte then I’ll have some hope for next week
— CFC DAILY (@CFCDaily) May 13, 2018
It’s ironic that Abramovich refused to sack Conte after losses to Bournemouth/Watford to avoid paying out the remainder of his contract. That decision has cost us Champions League football and millions in revenue…

Don’t think that I have ever felt so unconnected with a Chelsea first team squad (and I have seen some piss poor teams in my time) No commitment or desire. Spineless. Hang your heads. Stealing a living. A win next week won’t make up for this fraud season.

That the criticisms from the hardcore Chelsea faithful have been more cutting than the inevitable banter from rival fans says a lot about the disconnect at a club that could still end up with silverware this season.
The managerial situation could yet change in the build-up to the Wembley showpiece next Saturday.
if the Chelsea board had any sense, wed give Jody Morris the final, someone who’s just won the treble with out youth squad and would actually want Chelsea to win the FA CUP, not Conte
