Mundo Deportivo have revealed that Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho contacted not only N’Golo Kante, but also another star midfielder.
Of course, £90m Paul Pogba turned out to be Mourinho’s pet project upon his arrival at Old Trafford, but the Portuguese also scoured for the best midfielders that Europe has to offer in order to revive Manchester United’s engine room.
Yesterday saw the emergence of N’Golo Kante’s statement that he was approached by the Red Devils prior to moving to Chelsea.
Now, according to media in Spain, Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic was also the subject of Manchester United’s interest.
The Croatian felt frustrated at the Nou Camp; borne from being substituted 25 times as part of Barca’s star-studded midfield. In addition, the transfer window saw the recruitment of Denis Suarez and Andre Gomes, strengthening the competition he faced.
This prompted interest from Juventus, Chelsea and Manchester United.
The 28-year-old came to an agreement with the Catalan side, however, and has signed a contract with them until 2019. Since joining in 2014, Rakitic has make 112 appearances, scoring 18 goals in the process.
