Both central defence and central attack have been taken care of for Manchester United with the arrivals of Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku respectively, but the newly-formed spine of the side is yet to be completed.
The future composition of the Red Devils’ midfield is still to be determined, but it’s not down to a lack of trying on boss Jose Mourinho’s behalf.
The likes of Andre Gomes, Ross Barkley and in particular Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic have been the subject of interest from United, with the latter’s price tag said to be inflated as part of a ‘Lukaku tax‘.
Their attention now turns to a younger and potentially cheaper option in Tottenham’s Eric Dier, who up until now has been tenuously linked with Spurs’ Premier League rivals.
Nothing concrete has surfaced to-date, but Jim White, the incomparable host of Sky Sports News’ transfer coverage, has revealed that that a move for the Englishman is now in motion.

Given the extraordinary transfer fees on display in this transfer window, it’s unlikely that a final deal would amount to £40m for the 23-year-old.
However, he may be tempted to emulate Michael Carrick, who in 2006 moved to Manchester United as an English midfielder entering his prime. Mourinho would offer Dier game-time in his preferred midfield role.
At White Hart Lane, Dier has only missed three Premier League games in the last two seasons, but has sometimes been deployed in defence due to injuries and the proliferation of Mousa Dembélé and Victor Wanyama in Spurs’ midfield.
