The assistant Manchester United boss has reportedly read the riot-act to the out-of-form Memphis.
The 21-year-old winger has a solitary Premier League goal to his name, and his performance during and conduct after the 3-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates last week prompted the telling off from Giggs.
According to Steve Bates in the Sunday People, the talk was necessitated due to speculation that he enjoyed a night out on his return to Manchester after the loss.
An insider claimed:
“Memphis is photographed out and about more than other players and that’s not gone unnoticed. He’s been told to keep his head down a bit while his football catches up with the rest of his profile.”
It is also reported that Memphis was hauled off at half-time for failing to track back and fulfil his defensive duties, and was thus requested to improve on and off the field.
Following a £25m summer move from PSV Eindhoven, the Dutchman has struggled to match the demands of Premier League life, despite showing glimpses of his precocious talent in the Champions League.
Of course, Ryan Giggs is no stranger to a dressing down.
In Alex Ferguson’s first autobiography, Managing My Life, the redoubtable Scot recalled he how once chased a then 18-year-old Giggs out of a house-party at Lee Sharpe’s abode in 1992.
Giggs turned out alright, so perhaps doling out similar treatment to Memphis won’t go amiss.
