Premier League winning midfielder N’Golo Kante has confirmed Manchester United’s rumoured interest in him this past summer.
The attempt to sign the Frenchman came just weeks after that historic league win with his then-side Leicester City back in May. Jose Mourinho arrived on the Old Trafford scene soon after, and seemingly made the 25-year-old one of his top priorities.
‘The Special One’ went as far as to contact Kante directly, with the latter stating that he was even warned of Mourinho’s irresistible charm.
“It was amazing to have Mourinho call me, even though I’d been warned before how he would appeal to me,” Kante revealed.
“I listened to his arguments about why I should move to United. But at that time I was hesitant between staying at Leicester or leaving for Chelsea.”
Arsenal were also heavily linked with a move for Kante, but the now Antonio Conte-led Chelsea were always the frontrunners in the former Caen man’s eyes.
“My discussions with them were already well underway,” he continued.
“But when I spoke, I had a good feeling with Conte.”
N’Golo Kante duly signed for the Stamford Bridge side in July for a mammoth £32m fee.
“I am so happy to have signed for one of the biggest clubs in Europe. It’s a dream come true for me,” he gushed upon his arrival in London. His former stablemates Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both opted to stay at the King Power stadium, and signed new contracts with the Foxes.
