In order to challenge for trophies next season, a high-profile upgrade is needed in defence for Manchester United.
The unheralded Victor Lindelof was signed last summer from Benfica for €35m, but only mustered 17 league appearances for the Red Devils.
Chris Smalling has spent much of the season being lambasted by fans for his perceived lack of composure in the heart of defence. He performed well at Wembley in the FA Cup final, but the role of the fall guy was ably played by his central partner Phil Jones.
While Eric Bailly is regarded as the best United have to offer in that position, his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho has come into question.
It therefore stands to reason that Mourinho is in the market for an established centre back that would take some of the heat off of David de Gea. Per both The Guardian and Manchester Evening News, that man is none other than Tottenham Hotspurs’ Toby Alderweireld.
The Guardian state that the Belgian is similarly interested in a move to Old Trafford. He is yet to sign a contract, and a contract clause meaning he can leave next summer for just £25m means that Spurs might be inclined to sell.
While they claim that United may have to eclipse Liverpool’s £75m outlay on Virgil van Dijk, M.E.N report that United are negotiating a £55m bid for Alderweireld.
His wages are said to be an issue however, with the player almost in his 30s said to be demanding a 200% increase on his current £50k deal.
The centre back only made 21 appearances this season due to injury.
