Michael Owen Chooses Best XI’s He’s Played With And Against

Though not many are keen on his punditry since retiring from the game, there’s no doubting that Michael Owen has shared the pitch with some of the greatest players around.

Spells at Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester United offer fertile resources of world class players for Owen to choose from, as he did for a show with Steve Bower.

An eighteen year career from 1996 to 2013 where it ended at Stoke City has yielded the likes of the two Ronaldos, Messi, Henry and Zidane.

The teams themselves are as follows.

The clubs leading the ‘Played With’ XI stakes are Manchester United and Real Madrid with five representatives each.

Rio Ferdinand stands at the heart of a three-man back-line in an enticing 3-5-2 formation, while his legendary central partner Nemanja Vidic only makes the bench. The Red Devils make up the spine of the team, with Edwin van Der Sar in goal, Paul Scholes in midfield, and Wayne Rooney leading the line alongside Ronaldo of Brazil and Real Madrid.

Other Galaticos on show such as Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo (benched) illustrate the sensational depth of the ‘home’ team.

The ‘Played Against’ XI is no less exhilarating.

Having played in many big Champions League, World Cup and El Clasico ties, Owen can call on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Patrick Viera, Paulo Maldini and Rivaldo as esteemed opponents, drafted here in a classic 4-4-2 formation. When legends such as Roy Keane, Gianluigi Buffon and Francesco Totti can only make the bench, you know you’ve got a team on your hands.

While the ‘Against’ XI appear to have a slight edge in squad depth on the bench, the starting elevens look irresistibly well-matched.

Unfortunately, there’s no way of knowing which dream team would prevail, but it does make for some engrossing discussion.
