Relieved Manchester United forward Memphis has hailed assistant manager Ryan Giggs’ role in his resurgence-of-sorts after a difficult spell.
The sometimes abrasive manner of Memphis has dogged his start to life at Old Trafford – even prompting Giggs himself to give the youngster a dressing down.
Man United manager Louis van Gaal also expressed concern.
Memphis scored United’s first goal in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Watford, and was named man of the match.
The upturn in performance came after weeks of poor displays and off-field troubles, and Memphis has thanked Ryan Giggs for helping him get through a difficult patch.
“I think every young player goes through things but I keep training and enjoy the training sessions,” Memphis told MUTV.
“The stuff [I am learning] has stuck with me and Ryan Giggs has given me good advice and I’ve been working on some things with him. You need that backing and you need to back yourself and train well, and of course all the help is great to get through difficult times.
I’m happy to get the help of everyone and happy to play on Saturday to show that I can be important.”
“It was a difficult game [against Watford] in the end. I enjoyed the goal a lot, of course. I like to score goals. It was important for me to score a goal when I got a chance. I was happy.”
