Manchester United reportedly find themselves in a battle with Southampton for yet another Monaco prodigy according to France Football.
In a belated attempt to find a forward before last summer’s transfer window closed on Manchester United, then-manager Louis van Gaal scrambled to sign teenager Anthony Martial of Monaco. The Frenchman cost the Red Devils a mammoth £36m, but turned out to be a promising fan favourite with a ton of potential.
With the marquee signings of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the way, United’s spending spree is set to grind to a halt if Paul Pogba arrives.
While the Express claim that Bakayoko forms part of Mourinho’s £200m recruitment plans, The Telegraph assert that the 21-year-old will only be pursued if the Pogba deal falls through. The latter outlet also value the midfielder at a paltry £4m – mere pocket change to the spendthrift Red Devils.
The low valuation is due in part to Bakayoko’s lack of game-time upon arriving at the Stade Louis II in 2014. Just 22 appearances since then has seen the Parisian’s star fall since his impressive outings at Rennes.
Though Stoke and Southampton are more closely involved in the chase, no defensively-minded midfielders have yet joined Mourinho’s revolution at Old Trafford.
If Bakayoko is capable of emulating his predecessor in Anthony Martial, a move at a potential price of £4m is well worth considering.
