Roy Hodgson’s side find themselves in a disturbing amount of trouble following their 4-0 defeat to Manchester United yesterday.
The newly-appointed Frank de Boer was sacked after four straight defeats in their opening four Premier League games. His replacement Roy Hodgson isn’t faring much better.
Crystal Palace’s loss yesterday meant that the former England manager oversaw ten conceded goals in just three league games – three more than de Boer managed in four matches. Of course, the defensive calamities are compounded by the lack of success at the other end of the pitch. Record signing Christian Benteke, who wasn’t in great form to begin with, is now injured along with star winger Wilfried Zaha.
The result is a stark reality illustrated by @sportingintel.
Palace are the only team (of 314 teams) in the top divisions of Europe’s top 20 leagues not to score a goal in the 2017-18 league season.
According to Gazza Mercato, former AC Milan striker Alberto Gilardino is being courted by the Selhurst Park outfit, and is receptive to a move until June.
A former Champions League and World Cup winner, Gilardino is now 35 and last played for Serie B side Pescara. The Italian signed for AC Milan in 2005 from Parma, for whom he scored 51 goals in two seasons. He scored a combined 103 goals for Milan and subsequently Fiorentina.
Though his prime is long since behind him, Gilardino’s Pescara spell did comprise the second half of the 2016/17 Serie A season (Pescara finished bottom), so top level competition is still possible.
For Palace’s sake, let’s hope so.
