Heavy speculation has followed the omission of Benfica star Goncalo Guedes from today’s match-day squad against Tondela, with talk of an imminent departure to Manchester United.
The highly rated 20-year-old has been linked with a €30m move to Old Trafford in recent days, and today’s events in the Portuguese Primeira Liga have done nothing to dissuade the reports. This is despite the best efforts of Benfica boss Rui Vitoria in the wake of his team’s 4-0 win.
Vitoria’s comments, via Record, were necessitated by the dropping of Guedes, which came even though the winger appeared in each match-day squad dating back to October, and was not carrying any injuries. Although the youngster was fit to play, the manager attempted to explain his eye-raising absence.
“The coach is here to make decisions and decided that he was not suited for this game,” Vitoria stated.
“There were others available to play and I chose so. I don’t have any indications that Gonçalo will leave. The President knows what he must do in relation to Goncalo.”
The same outlet claim the decision is indicative of the player’s departure, with Manchester United the likely destination.
Guedes has also been linked to French giants PSG, with his agent Jorge Mendes at the helm of negotiations. Having scored eleven league goals in all for the Lisbon outfit to date, his potential has ensured the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
