The Arsenal boss can breathe a sigh of relief as the confirmation of striker Lucas Perez’s arrival to the Emirates becomes final.
A poor start to the league, coupled with frustrating troubles in the transfer market, saw Arsene Wenger under severe pressure just two weeks into the season.
However, one impressive win away to Watford along with the signing of Lucas Perez (and the impending purchase of defender Shkodran Mustafi), has seen the opening month optimism that the Gunner faithful are famed for return, to a degree.
In speaking to Arsenal.com, the Frenchman explained how the 27-year-old will surprise many observers who may not yet be aware of his new player’s talent.
“I’m happy because I believe he has the qualities to integrate into our team very well,” Wenger told Arsenal’s official website.
“He’s not only a goalscorer, he’s a guy who combines well with partners, who can give a final ball and makes good runs. I think people will be a little bit surprised maybe, because nobody knows him very well. He has travelled a bit across Europe.
“He’s a late developer in this position because he has always played on the flanks. He’s got a good eye for goal and had an outstanding season last year in a team that didn’t create too many chances.”
Though the Spaniard is primed to make a positive contribution at his new club, Wenger readily admits that Perez’s status as Arsenal’s only immediate forward signing of the summer (bar the on loan Takuma Asano) represents a gamble on his part.
“I’m confident, he has pace, good technical levels, is a good finisher and he has the ingredients to be a success,” Wenger continued.
It’s always a little bit of a gamble to come from one country to another, with different challenges, but I believe it was a gamble worth taking. I’m excited about that.”
