The Spanish newspaper report that interest from Arsene Wenger sees his Arsenal side as favourites to sign the highly-rated Mario Gotze.
Though The Sun have already made similar noises surrounding a possible Mario Gotze – Arsenal link, but Mundo Deportivo’s assertion that Arsenal are bidding favourites is more positive (and reliable) news for the Gooner faithful. The Bundesliga winner would complement Arsene Wenger’s team in the final third, having scored 36 goals since joining Bayern Munich in 2013.
While Gotze is keen on seeing out the final year of his contract at the Allianz Arena, Bayern reportedly want to sell and cash-in on the 24-year-old’s high profile before his agreement expires in 2017.
“Gotze wants to fulfill the contract year that sees him stay until June 2017,” writes Francesc Aguilar.
“Munich would prefer him to leave now, to accept one of the many multi-millions dollar offers that have come through for him, with Arsene Wenger of Arsenal at the head, but also with several other clubs in the Premier League.”
Foremost among those other League clubs is Liverpool, who have been heavily linked with the World Cup winner since his former boss Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield last year.
The two spent four years together at Borussia Dortmund, and their connection was understood to be pivotal to an expected move.
The fact that Arsene Wenger has been name-checked as a suitor though, makes matters complicated and very interesting.
