After a quiet but intriguing first half of football in the Saint Petersburg Stadium, the opening goal in today’s World Cup semi-final came from Samuel Umtiti.
After Belgium and France entered the dressing rooms all square after the first 45 minutes of action, many had expected things to pick up considerably after the break.
Not to say that it wasn’t an entertaining affair, though. Both sides had their opportunities, something that made the 0-0 scoreline we finished the half with a bit of a surprise, all things considered.
When they reset for the second-half it didn’t take long for the deadlock to break – with Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti bringing the goods to table with a deft header after a French corner.
Out-jumping the towering presence that is Marouane Fellaini, Umtiti opened his account for the tournament and came through with one of the most memorable celebrations of the World Cup to date.
