Despite the fact that they just reached the Champions League final, Eamon Dunphy isn’t exactly convinced of Liverpool’s prospects as a top-tier European outfit.
Liverpool pulled through with a result for the ages last night when they managed to get past Roma and book their place in the Champions League final later this month against Real Madrid.
Leading the tie 5-2 on aggregate, they endured a bit of a scare at the hands of their Italian hosts but fortunately managed to avoid losing out in the most dramatic of fashions by taking home 7-6 win over the two legs.
Eamon Dunphy who joined the RTE post-match analysis, gave his take on the Liverpool side and how they approached going to Rome with a lead and while he was clearly happy to see the club reach the final, he didn’t hold back in his criticism of their defense.
“You just need a goalkeeper, they don’t have one. You need two central defenders, they’ve only got one. To give four goals away to Roma, in those circumstances, and there could have been two penalties – they don’t really know how to manage a game.”

Liverpool’s front trio have been getting some serious praise in recent times but it is true that their frailties at the back could be exposed by the elite of the elite. Whether Real Madrid will be able to do that over 90 minutes will be determined later this month.
