Brian Barry-Murphy has been linked with a potential move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in what is a desperate reflection of the volatility in the Premier League.
Wolves are said to be considering the future of Rob Edwards, who was only appointed six weeks ago, with the Molineux club in peril and almost certainly facing relegation back to the Championship.
This is madness.
The protracted situation around Edwards and Wolves lasted weeks, with the boss slowly parting ways with Middlesbrough, who are faring well in the second tier and in strong contention to hit the Premier League next term.
Plenty questioned why he would swap that for a relegation dogfight this season, with one arm behind his back, but family, proximity, and possibly a better wage sealed the deal.
You would wonder if Edwards is having regrets now, amid speculation that his Wolves bosses are considering his position.
On Tuesday evening, he ended a barren run of seven straight defeats since moving to the West Midlands, with a credible 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
He will hope that buys breathing space to gather points on the board, but surely relegation was more than likely, and Edwards is a safe pair of hands if the club does fall back to the Championship after 10 seasons in the Premier League.
The volatility and short shelf-life of managers in England’s top flight is ridiculous, but that is the nature of the beast in a results-driven business.
There is also a sense of deja vu around the speculation as Barry-Murphy was mentioned as a replacement for Edwards at Middlesbrough, before the appointment of Kim Hellberg.

As for Brian Barry-Murphy, he won’t entertain talk of another job while a manager is in place, and he has his own to focus on.
However, TeamTalk has reported that he is under consideration by Wolves chiefs.
To be mentioned as a contender means he must be doing something right and the Cork man has the Bluebirds flying at the top of League One, after their relegation last season.
He has thrived since being appointed in the summer, on a three-year deal, and the 47-year-old appears in no rush to leave the Welsh capital.
Hearts’ Derek McInnes has also been linked with the Wolves job, but that appears to be another non-runner.
