St Patrick’s Athletic revel in FAI Cup glory as they secure dramatic shootout win

St Patrick's Athletic Cup Final

Stephen O’Donnell was delighted with St Patrick’s Athletic’s FAI Cup win.

St Patrick’s Athletic boss Stephen O’Donnell admitted his delight that his side were able to round off their 2021 League of Ireland campaign with an FAI Cup final win against Bohemians.

The Saints won the FAI Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win against their fierce Dublin rivals. And it was one that secured their first major trophy since 2014.

While they have won League Cup’s, they have rarely challenged when it comes to the crunch, but now they have catapulted themselves back into the top table of Irish football.

“It’s more relief when you’re on the coaching side,” an emotional O’Donnell said after the game. “When you’re a player you’re jumping up and down and are jubilant, but for us it was just relief.

“We spoke about it during the week about how it is unbelievable how many FAI Cup finals have gone to extra-time so we were practicing all week.

“I would have been delighted with our boys before today, getting to an FAI Cup final and coming second in the league.

“And I would have classed this season as a very good one before today, but this just adds the icing on the cake after the year we’ve had.”

The Saints took the lead in extra-time through Chris Forrester, before they were then pegged back by a brilliant Rory Feely header.

But they held out to bring the game the penalties, and it was a shootout they won, much to the relief of Forrester who missed his penalty.

“Today I rocked in, I was nimble,” Forrester told RTE Sport after the game. “I sound like a boxer but I was loose and ready to go. I think I had an average enough game but the goal topped it off.

“At the end of the day it doesn’t matter, we won the trophy. That’s the end of it.

“I was obviously a bit anxious when I missed my peno. I thought that was it. But V [goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros] came up trumps for us and the lads slotted away their penalties when they needed to as well. We’re delighted.

“We’ll keep on building and rock into next season full of confidence.”
