Real Madrid Man City

Man City have been knocked out of the Champions League..

A sensational late fightback from Real Madrid inspired them to the Champions League final, at the expense of Manchester City, winning 6-5 on aggregate.

Up until the 89th minute of the game, City looked as if they are were all but on their way to Paris for a Champions League final showdown against Liverpool, but they were undone by Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Riyad Mahrez gave City a 1-0 lead on the night in normal time, putting them 5-3 clear on aggregate, but they were to have their hearts broken in the Spanish capital.

A brace from Brazilian Rodrygo pegged City back, before a penalty from Karim Benzema saw Real Madrid through, after they trailed the tie heading into the second leg.

Despite being dumped out of the competition, City were rarely troubled by an off-colour Real Madrid attack until the 89th minute of the game, who did not record a single shot on target during that timeframe.

Guardiola’s side grabbed their deserved lead in the 73rd minute of the contest in Spain, after a marauding run forward by Bernardo Silva.

The Portuguese attacking midfielder split the Real Madrid defence open with a darting run forward, before then laying the ball off to Mahrez who made no mistake.

The former Leicester City winger’s cause was aided by Thibaut Courtois’ rash decision to dive early, allowing the Algerian international to blast home at the near post.

Rodrygo’s late show saves Real Madrid.

But City were to be pegged back in late on in injury time, with Brazilian Rodrygo netting an incredible brace for the hosts, bringing the game to extra-time.

The first arrived following a superb knock-down across the penalty area by Benzema, which Rodrygo tapped home after beating Ederson to the ball.

His second, however, was the most remarkable of all, as he rose highest to head past the despairing hand of Ederson, after an expertly delivered ball into the box from Daniel Carvajal.

It went from bad to worse for City in extra-time, however, with Benzema slotting home a penalty after he was felled by Ruben Dias inside the penalty area.

And incredibly, that was how the game finished, with City left to rue a host of missed opportunities during the game, and a 10-minute period that saw them cough up three goals between normal time, injury time, and then, extra-time.

City did go close in extra-time although, with Fernandinho missing a sitter at the back stick, following a headed effort from Phil Foden.

But it will be a repeat of the 2018 final, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool set to do battle with the Spanish champions in Paris.
