The latest Michael Obafemi comments by Swansea City’s boss may explain his continued absence

It has been far from a vintage start to Michael Obafemi’s life as a Swansea City player.

Michael Obafemi was left out of Swansea City’s squad on Saturday yet again, and his manager’s recent comments may suggest why he has been missing out.

Obafemi, 21, made his Republic of Ireland debut during the tail-end of the Martin O’Neill reign, but he has not played for the Boys in Green since.

And just a few weeks ago, his manager explained that the forward was struggling with ‘disciplinary’ issues at his new club.

While those issues may have been ironed out by now, Swansea boss Russell Martin has opened up on an equally damning reason why he is not playing for his club side.

“He needs to get into a place where he is really fit and really ready to come on and have an impact for us,” said Martin.

“He has come on at Coventry and [against] Blackpool and not had the impact he wants, not had the impact we want. I think it’s down to conditioning.”

Obafemi was most recently on the Swansea City U23s bench this week against Charlton, and was only given 60 minutes of action before being forced off.

“We have a guy who shows up every day, trains so hard, Liam Cullen, and who really deserves to be on the bench at the minute,” Martin added.

“With Michael, he is a brilliant lad. We need to try to help him to settle in, to get to where he needs to be physically so he trusts his body and when he comes onto the pitch he can have the impact that Joel Piroe and Liam Cullen have.

“We will do – I have got no doubt about it – but with some people it just takes a little bit longer than others.”
