Disgraceful scenes.

Sheffield United forward Billy Sharp was allegedly assaulted by a Nottingham Forest fan, in the aftermath of the Blades’ dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Forest on Tuesday evening.

Watching from the sideline, Sharp was attacked in an unprovoked manner, after Brice Samba made three remarkable saves in an equally dramatic penalty shootout.

But the ensuing shootout saw Forest fans invade the pitch, leading to Sharp being allegedly assaulted in the aftermath of the game by a 31-year-old supporter.

“We know what has happened. It’s bang out of order…”

As per the available footage, the supporter seemingly blind-sighted Sharp was caught unawares by the collision.

As a result, the incident sparked outcry from the Sheffield United camp, with manager Paul Heckingbottom hitting out at the incident.

“I watch every Monday Night Football, every Super Sunday, my time up in Scotland, there has been so many people talking about seeing things thrown on the pitch, fans invading the pitch, seeing things that put players’ health and safety in danger,” he stressed after the game.

“We’ve seen it. We know what has happened. It’s bang out of order. We’re the ones that suffer. It’s upsetting for a lot of reasons.”

Following the incident, a 31-year-old man was arrested after the game, and remains in custody.

“A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with this incident,” a statement read after the game. “He remains in custody and will be questioned by officers.

“Our enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

“We have spoken to the player concerned and we are working with both clubs who are supporting us with our investigation.”
