Former Republic of Ireland player and assistant manager, Roy Keane, sat down with ex-Munster star, Donncha O’Callaghan to discuss life after retirement for a new Virgin Media documentary entitled, ‘Game Over: True Lives’.
During the interview, Keane, who is set to join up again with Martin O’Neill at Nottingham Forrest, discussed a range of topics including his attitude as a player, adjusting to retired life, and his first managerial role with Sunderland.
The Cork man told O’Callaghan that he has become much more “relaxed” since hanging up his boots but insisted that as a player, he needed to bring that level of intensity to his game in order to ensure he kept his his side were one of the best.
“I love that about top-level sport, dog eat dog. If it wasn’t dog eat dog, we’d all relax and we’d win nothing.”

“I’m quite relaxed now but when I was a player, people would say to me you’re intense. Dead right I was intense, cause I was fighting for my life every day.”
When the topic turns to his fitness since retiring, Keane adamantly revealed that, while he tries to stay active, he doesn’t like the idea of gym work or organised exercise.
“I like to get up early, I like to do some sort of physical exercise but I wouldn’t be going to the gym or going cycling or swimming or joining clubs or lifting weights or anything like that.”

“I did an interview a few years ago and some guys asked me who puts my bins out and I said ‘I’ve to put my bins out — living a normal life,” Keane continued.
“I’ve offered my young fella a few bob but he won’t do it so there’s things you have to do and drive the kids to school and I’m stuck in traffic going like is this my life.”
