There is an shocking name being put forward to become the new Manchester United assistant manager when Jose Mourinho reportedly takes over from Louis van Gaal in the summer.

Current assistant manager at Old Trafford is all round United legend Ryan Giggs, who has recently celebrated 25 years at the club and has been widely assumed to be staying on at United regardless of the manager in charge.

Now however it is being suggested on social media that fans would be keen to see another United legend, none other than newly unemployed Gary Neville, step in as assistant to Mourinho.

The ink isn’t even dry on his press statement in Spain but Neville is already a fan favourite to succeed his old friend, Giggs, at the club that made him a star.

Neville was only appointed as manager of Valencia back in December by friend and business partner Peter Lim in a deal that would see him remain in Spain until the summer. However, Neville endured a torrid time in charge, winning only 10 of 28 in charge in a run that saw his side knocked out of the Copa del Rey, the Champions League and the Europa League.

Now, out of contract Neville is free to return to England and United fans seem to believe he is too valuable not to be back to United.

This could present something of an awkward scenario between long time friends Giggs and Neville as were he to be brought into United as assistant, Neville would be taking the job that Ryan Giggs has enjoyed since 2014, a position while he had hoped would give him the chance to step up to manage his boyhood club.

In football however, sentiment often gets cast aside where winning is concerned and fans are eager to see the return of winning ways at Old Trafford. With Giggs on the staff for the bad times, fans’ sentiment seems to be against the Welsh man.

This fan even suggested an option for Giggs.

It remains to be seen just what is going to happen at United this Summer as nothing has been confirmed regarding Louis van Gaal or Jose Mourinho, but it is certainly an intriguing option for the United board, now that Neville is in the hunt for work.
