Anthony Cacace set up a huge homecoming in Belfast after his impressive ninth-round TKO victory over Leigh Wood.
The Northern Irishman retained the IBO super-featherweight title in Nottingham to set himself up with a world title scrap and leave Wood deciding his next career move.
Cacace, 36, vacated his IBF world title – a higher accolade – to fight Wood and didn’t beat around the bush for his reasoning after his victory. He said on DAZN: “I took this fight solely for money.
“The money was double. Show me the money, I will travel anywhere. My time is now.”
Cacace came into the bout on an eight-fight winning streak, including victories over Joe Cordina and Josh Warrington. Wood was stepping into the ring for the first time since October 2023.
There was little to separate the pair until the ninth round when Cacace spotted an opportunity with Wood wavering. He unleashed a pummel of punches that forced Wood’s corner to throw in the towel.
His promoter Frank Warren praised both fighters after the headline event as he looks to plot Cacace’s next challenge. He said: “He’s going to get his fight now in Belfast.
“Go to Belfast and give him a big homecoming. It was a world class fight with two world class fighters who gave their all to a good sporting crowd.
“When you look at their age, it was a real high tempo fight. I loved it, everybody loved it. It was really enjoyable.”
Cacace revealed he wasn’t in the best frame of mind heading into the fight, with the pressure almost impacting his performance. He added: “I put a lot of pressure on myself. I had nothing but negative feelings coming in here but I’ve fought three two-time world champions.
“Leigh’s had a long time off. I didn’t beat the best Leigh Wood but I beat Leigh Wood and I appreciate Nottingham, thank you for inviting me here, you’re a great crowd.”
