Watch: “Let’s Go Champ” – Shannon Briggs Shows Up At David Haye Press Conference

David Haye announced on Wednesday that he will fight undefeated Kosovo-Albanian heavyweight Arnold Gjergjaj on May 21st at London’s O2 Arena in what will be second fight of his comeback run.

The 31-year-old Gjergjaj is 29-0 with 21 of those victories coming by way of stoppage, but he has built that record almost exclusively in his adopted home of Switzerland against mostly mediocre opposition. The only recognisable name on his ledger, which stretches back to 2009, is that of Denis Bahktov. The 39-11 Russian veteran fought Britain’s Anthony Joshua back in late 2014 and only managed to scrape his way into the 2nd round against the Olympic gold medallist, yet he went the full 12 with Gjergjaj in June of last year.

Like Haye’s last opponent, Mark de Mori, Gjergjaj has a numerically attractive record that is found to possess very little substance when subjected to further examination.

According to Haye though, “The Cobra” was chosen because more highly-rated fighters have been making unreasonable financial demands.

“A lot of the guys in the top 10 want ridiculous money and there’s no budget to get these guys,” said the Londoner(via The Daily Mail). “They say they want to fight you, but then when you speak to them they give you a totally unrealistic number”.

One person that is interested in fighting the former cruiserweight king, however, is Shannon Briggs. And wouldn’t you know it, the New Yorker was on hand to call, nay scream, for a shot at Haye, all the while repeating his now infamous catchphrase – “Let’s go champ!”
