Sergey Kovalev registered his second stoppage win over former light-heavyweight champion Jean Pascal at the Bell’s Centre in Montreal on Saturday night.
The fight was more one-sided than their first contest and lacked the sparks of drama that made the March, 2015 scrap one of the most entertaining of last year. Kovalev routinely hammered Pascal with his thudding right-hand, and by the end of the 7th round the Haitian-Canadian fighter’s new trainer, Freddie Roach, had seen enough. He summoned the referee and instructed him to call a halt to the onslaught.
While the bout itself was bereft of the absorbing drama of it’s predecessor, the post-fight threw up some excitement.
During his interview with HBO’s Max Kellerman, Kovalev comically taunted lineal light-heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, by calling him “Adonis Chickenson” and bafflingly making duck noises. This brought a screaming Stevenson careening into view. “I’m the real champ!” roared “Superman”. A grinning Kovalev simply extended his middle-finger in response.
Boxing gods, please make this fight happen.
