Danny Garcia successfully rebounded from the first loss of his professional career on Saturday night, finishing Brandon Rios in the ninth round of a welterweight bout at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Garcia, who was fighting for the first time since his split decision defeat to Keith Thurman in Brooklyn eleven months ago, didn’t have things all his own way against the game, tough Rios. Though it’s been several years and a couple of weight classes since Rios has looked like a real force, his heart and tenacity kept him in the fight. Still, Garcia was likely a couple of rounds ahead going into the fateful ninth.
It was one punch, a perfect straight right hand, that brought an end to the bout. With a little less than a minute remaining in the round, both men threw their jabs, but Garcia followed with the right, which found a home on the now unprotected left side of Rios’ face. Momentarily unconscious, ‘Bam Bam’ collapsed to the floor where he lay, flat on his back, for the next few seconds. Somehow, he rose to his feet at the count of eight but he stumbled badly and referee Kenny Bayless correctly waved the contest off.

With the win, Garcia moved to 34-1 with 20 stoppages. There are a number of appealing fights for him going forward in the talent-rich 147-pound weight class, including against Shawn Porter, with whom he had a little altercation post-fight.

Rios dropped to 34-4-1 as he was beaten and stopped for the second time in three fights. It was also his fourth defeat in seven bouts.
