Update: Nick Blackwell In Coma Following Chris Eubank Jr. Defeat

Pundit Arena reported this morning that Nick Blackwell had been taken to hospital following his defeat to Chris Eubank Jr. on Saturday night at the Wembley Arena.

Unfortunately, updates are suggesting that Blackwell’s condition is more serious than was originally thought.

A few hours ago, via Twitter, Daily Star journalist Chris McKenna revealed the news that the 25-year-old fighter had been placed in a medically induced coma after a bleed was discovered outside of his brain. McKenna added, however, that doctors are optimistic about Blackwell’s chances of recovery.

According to British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith(via The Guardian), the fighter is currently in intensive care.

“He’s in intensive care, he’s in an induced coma and he is resting and being looked after by the experts,” said Smith.

“It’s a very normal procedure. They put you in a coma to get the swelling to go down. There’s no timescale. Now it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing”.

Encouragingly, another report, from The Telegraph, quoted a source close to Blackwell as saying that the fighter’s situation hadn’t worsened overnight and that medical staff were beginning to ease him off of the barbiturates used to bring about the comatose state.

“The brain hasn’t swollen overnight. Doctors say that’s encouraging,” said the source. “The team are all still at hospital where he’s in induced coma. Slowly taking him off sedatives now”.

The Trowbridge native’s brave third defence of the British middleweight title was halted in the 10th round after the ringside doctor advised the referee that Blackwell, whose eye was a swollen mess thanks to the consistent and prolonged pummelling he had received from Eubank, was in no position to continue.
