Twitter Reacts As Katie Taylor Demolishes Opponent On Professional Debut

Ireland’s 2012 Olympic gold medallist and multiple-time world amateur champion Katie Taylor began her professional boxing odyssey on Saturday night, taking on Polish veteran Karina Kopinska in a super-featherweight six-rounder at the Wembley Arena.

London was the site of her greatest triumph as an amateur and so it was somewhat fitting that Taylor launched her career in the paid ranks in the city as well.

Sporting a record of 7-14-3, Kopinska didn’t look likely to pose a threat, but the fact that she had only ever been stopped once as a pro – by the heavy-handed Maiva Hamadouche back in 2013 – suggested that she had the punch resistance and ring savvy to give Taylor a good workout.

However, it didn’t really turn out like that as Taylor began hammering Kopinska with blistering combinations from the very get go. She pushed the tough 27-year-old back constantly and dropped some beautiful shots to the body amidst varied barrages to the head.

Kopinska was in a shell, firing very little back by the third round and the referee was given little choice but to call a halt to the slaughter.

Although it came against a completely over-matched opponent, this was an impressive start from Taylor who looks likely to get another run-out on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s IBF heavyweight title defence against Eric Molina on December 10th.
