Tony Bellew Claims Talks Are Underway Regarding Possible Showdown With David Haye

Tony Bellew has told Sky Sports that discussions regarding a fight between he and David Haye have already begun.

Bellew won the WBC cruiserweight title in Goodison Park on May 29th, when he recovered from a first-round knockdown to stop Ilunga Makabu in the third, and immediately after the fight he launched a surprising tirade against the London heavyweight.

“That bitch from Bermondsey(Haye), I’ll fight him too,” said Bellew. “Come back down to your natural weight and fight a real cruiserweight, because you’ve gone long enough fighting them clowns”.

A Bellew vs Haye fight hadn’t previously been on anyone’s radar and it seemed somewhat fantastical at first, but in the days that followed the Liverpudlian’s hometown heroics this all-British clash began to look like a real possibility.

Haye sounded amenable to the fight during an Instagram video in which he responded to Bellew’s attack, and “The Bomber” told Sky that he would be willing to move to heavyweight to make it happen.

Then, on Sunday, came Bellew’s revelation that things have progressed further.

“We are in talks,” said Bellew, before once again going on the offensive. “The two of us are speaking at the moment and we’ll see where it goes but I want to fight the ‘Haye-faker’, I’d say Hayemaker but it’s ‘Haye-faker’ because he’s pulled out of that many fights over the last few years. He ran scared – absolutely petrified from Tyson Fury – not once, but twice”.

“He pulls out of that many fights and he then actually goes on to fight clowns to be honest. Mark de Mori and the other guy, Lurch(Arnold Gjergjaj) – it was just ridiculous the last two opponents he’s had. He wouldn’t use them as sparring partners so I’m happy to fight ‘Haye-faker’ any time, any place, it doesn’t really matter to me”.

“I was over 15st when I got in the ring with Ilunga Makabu so there’s no issue there. Believe you me when I say, if I hit David Haye with the same left hook I hit Ilunga Makabu with, he will go to sleep exactly the same way”.

Speaking about his options at cruiserweight, Bellew claimed that he is still interested in unification fights, but added that none of the other titleholders are available at present.

One cruiser that has expressed an interest in fighting Bellew however, is Grigory Drozd.

Drozd was the previous holder of the green belt currently in the Englishman’s possession, but he was demoted to champion-in-recess after he was twice forced to pull out of fights with Makabu due to injury. This opened the door for Bellew to fight for the vacant belt.

The Russian’s current status entitles him to a shot at the new champion, and he has announced his intention to exercise this right. According to Bad Left Hook, Drozd claims he will be ready in “autumn or winter”.

Regardless of what options present themselves at cruiserweight however, none will be as lucrative as a showdown with Haye.
