While the entire world has erupted with opinions on who will win, how farcical a contest it would be and whether or not it will be good for MMA, or boxing, or both, one point seems to stick out. A large amount of people out there (not just Irish) feel that Conor McGregor, 0-0 in boxing, will be able to KO the greatest defensive boxer of his generation.
‘Money‘ made his name from phenomenal head movement, an expert guard, a near patented shoulder roll and lightening fast counters. While he sustained very little damage over his career, largely due to his excellence, he did get caught occasionally. An array of people, including Dana White, feel if ‘The Notorious’ can connect with that kryptonite left hand, it will be lights out for Mayweather and a 49-1 record.
Mayweather vs Mosley
But are people discrediting Mayweather’s chin and powers of recovery? Check out the footage of the second round of his fight with ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, back in 2010.
For some context, Mosley amassed a record of 49-10-1-1 over the course of his professional boxing career. He shared the ring with some of the greatest boxers of our generation. Mayweather, Pacquiao, De La Hoya, Canelo, Margarito, Cotto. Household names. Over that prestigious career, 41 of his wins came via knockout. So this wasn’t a pillow-handed, points fighter. Mayweather got rocked by a big hitter in the above video. And recovered to win a unanimous decision on the scorecards.
Mayweather also survived 24 bruising rounds with Argentine wrecking ball Marcos Maidana. Maidana was another renowned power puncher, who collected 31 of his 35 professional wins via KO. In his two fights with Mayweather, Maidana was made to look silly for long spells, but caught ‘Money’ flush at the end of round 3, in their second fight.
While Mayweather was saved by the bell, watch how quickly he recovers a defensive position, and his guard. His instinctive defensive abilities have proven impossible to overcome, thus far. Given that Mayweather vs McGregor will feature 10oz boxing gloves, McGregor could have his work cut out rocking ‘Money’.
