Two-time Olympic gold medallist Nicola Adams made a successful professional debut on Saturday night, beating Argentina’s Virginia Noemi Carcamo on points over four rounds at the Manchester Arena.
As a match-up on paper, it was exactly what one would expect for the maiden pro outing of a hyped prospect, with Adams’ opponent coming into the bout sporting a modest 4-2-1 record. However, given the level of opposition that was placed in front of her, the performance that Adams delivered on canvas was perhaps a little disappointing.
In the early going in particular, ‘The Lioness’ lacked fluidity and even got caught with the occasional wild shot from Carcamo. Adams certainly warmed to the task as the bout wore on and began to time her admittedly awkward opponent with greater frequency, but the English flyweight was unable to get the durable Carcamo out of there. Still, she did enough to win every round on the referee’s scorecard.
It was a so-so debut, but Adams is better than she showed here and she will get another chance to prove as much on the 13th of next month in Leeds according to her promoter Frank Warren.
Though the pair are several weight classes apart, it seemed inevitable that Adams would face comparisons to Ireland’s Katie Taylor, who scored the fourth win of her own pro career at the same arena just two weeks ago, regardless of what kind of performance the former Team GB star turned in here. After all, the two had long been the biggest stars of women’s amateur boxing and they turned pro under the guidance of rival promoters only months apart. With Taylor getting the star treatment on Sky Sports since making the transition into the paid ranks and Adams’ debut heavily promoted by BT Sport, they have also been receiving a level of attention that has never previously been afforded to female pro fighters on this side of the Atlantic.
Shortly after Adams’ hand was raised aloft in Manchester, those comparisons flooded Twitter.
Dont think Nicola Adams is close to the skill level of Katie Taylor, just wild.
